Caring for a child with cerebral palsy can be difficult, and sometimes it drives people to extreme acts if they cannot get the help and compensation they need for their care. A tragic case in North Carolina reported by NBC News shows an example.
A grandmother was arrested after police were called to her house and a child was discovered dead. The 8-year-old child had cerebral palsy and required a feeding tube to live.
An autopsy determined that the boy had starved to death and contracted acute bronchopneumonia from the lack of nutrition. He was only 25 pounds.
The grandmother was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Initial reports say the grandchild was not receiving proper care. Seven other children were living in the house and have been taken in by the Cumberland County Department of Social Services.
The child’s mother lives in Florida and said that her son also had epilepsy. The grandmother has been released on a $250,000 unsecured bond. She had custody of the children since April 2017, but none of the children were registered at a school.
We will never know all the circumstances that lead up to this tragic conclusion, but we hope that the mother of the child receives justice and that the children can get the care they need to lead a healthy life and deal with the circumstances.
