Paralympic athletes participate in sports similar to non-disabled athletes, but they also have sports that are unique to them as well. A new sport just made its debut and may soon be a part of the Paralympics. The National reports.
The sport is called RaceRunning. RaceRunning is a racing event that uses a special three-wheeled frame that allows people with disabilities, including people with cerebral palsy, race on a standard track.
Before it can become a sport, research has to be done to make it fair. Research at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh created a classification system so that people can compete with others with a similar impairment in the event.
This research allowed the sport to debut at the World Para Athletic Championships in Dubai. Now further research is underway to prove that the sport is worthy of the Paralympics Games, perhaps as early as 2024.
The researchers are also studying the health benefits of the activity for children with CP.
Cerebral palsy makes it difficult to control muscle movements, but thanks to frames and other assistance devices there are ways for people with CP to participate in some sports. We hope that RaceRunning helps children with CP to experience the fun of racing in a safe manner.
