Parents of children with a severe disability might hire someone to take care of their child while they to go work. Most nurses do their job with diligence and kindness. But sometimes things go wrong, like this case from Tennessee. WJLA reports.
A video taped by the mother shows the LPN she hired abused her son. She reported it to the police and the licensing board, and now the local media.
Dawn Caldwell told WJLA that the nurse was hired to care for her 20-year-old son. He has cerebral palsy. A few days after the hire, her son’s mood changed for the worse.
When she saw the nurse kick her son’s foot during a procedure, she and her husband bought cameras. The recorded video caught the nurse poking, slapping, and shaking her charge. Caldwell forced the nurse to leave, then reported her to authorities.

To her dismay, the licensing board allowed the nurse to renew her license and the court system moved the nurse to a pretrial diversion. This is where her charges would be dropped if she complies with the law for a period of time. That’s when Caldwell went to the media. She seeks justice for her son’s treatment.
We hope that Mrs. Caldwell can get the justice she and her son deserve. No nurse should keep their license if they’ve been caught abusing a patient.
